How to Read a Rolex Reference Number

Rolex reference numbers are codes that provide detailed information about the watch, including its model, material, bezel type, and sometimes the movement. Understanding these reference numbers can help you identify specific features and characteristics of a Rolex watch. Here's a breakdown of how to interpret Rolex reference numbers:

Pre-1980s Reference Numbers

Before the 1980s, Rolex reference numbers typically had four to five digits. These numbers provide basic information about the watch model but lack some of the detailed distinctions found in later references.

Post-1980s Reference Numbers

From the 1980s onwards, Rolex began using five-digit reference numbers, and in the 2000s, six-digit reference numbers were introduced. These provide more detailed information about the watch.

Example of a Five-Digit Reference Number: 16610

  • First Two Digits (16): Model type. The "16" indicates a Submariner.
  • Third Digit (6): Material. The "6" in this position usually indicates stainless steel.
  • Last Two Digits (10): Specific model within the Submariner line.

Example of a Six-Digit Reference Number: 116610LN

  • First Digit (1): Indicates that this is an updated version of a previous model.
  • Next Two Digits (16): Model type. The "16" still indicates a Submariner.
  • Fourth Digit (1): Bezel type. This can indicate various types of bezels, such as precious metals or ceramic.
  • Last Two Digits (10): Specific model within the Submariner line.
  • Suffix Letters (LN): Color and material of the bezel. "LN" stands for "Lunette Noir" (black bezel).
